This is England
Highly politicized, this film has become a cult favorite among Brits, who see the parallels between the Thatcher-era the story depicts and the present. The central character is a 12-year-old boy in coastal England in 1983 who falls in with a local skinhead gang. Shane Meadows (“Twenty Four Seven”) wrote and directed this astute look at the nihilism practiced by young people whose options have been severely limited. Just as unemployment, civil unrest, recession and racism set the scene here, these same tensions are in the forefront in the UK today.
