This Happy Breed
Set in London during the years between the two world wars, it was the most successful British film of 1944 and launched David Lean’s stellar career (“Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Bridge on the River Kwai”). The British general strike, the jazz era and the Depression are all seen through the prism of a working-class family. If you have not seen this marvelous, heartwarming film, you are in for a wonderful viewing experience. For her masterful and poignant performance as the mother of three grown children and the rock around which the family revolves, Celia Johnson won the US National Board of Review award for Best Actress. Watch out for Robert Newton and Stanley Holloway as her neighbors.
(UK, 105 minutes, 1944, 35 mm)
"This second of David Lean's four collaborations with Noël Coward provides a fascinating picture of the way we were.'' Radio Times
