The Sapphires
An infectious musical set in the remote Outback in 1960s Australia at a time of great social unrest. It weaves a “Dreamgirls”-like story of four sisters who are desperate for a pop music career- even though their traditionalist family objects vehemently. The cast really can sing and dance, and the Motown hits keep coming. Irish actor Chris O’Dowd, so funny in “Bridesmaids,” does a hilarious turn as their manager, who gets the Sapphires a gig performing in the war zone in Vietnam. Wayne Blair knocks one out of the park his first time directing. Based on a true story.
