The Deadly Affair
A British agent sets out to uncover the hidden facts behind a British government employee’s suicide. Based on John LeCarre’s first book, “A Call For The Dead”—in which his famous spy character George Smiley makes his debut—it is one of the better Le Carr’e screen adaptations (Paul Dehn). James Mason plays the consummate spook–astutely supported by Simone Signoret, Harriet Andersson, Maximilian Schell, Harry Andrews, Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave. Directed by SIdney Lumet (“Dog Day Afternoon,” “Network,” “12 Angry Men”). this is a complex, suspenseful and sometimes surprisingly funny spy film that’s a credit to its brilliant source material, screenplay and cast.
Introduced by Noir expert, Tony Broadbent.
