Odd Man Out
A wounded IRA member faces betrayal on all sides when the British put a price on his head. Director Carol Reed (“The Third Man,” “Fallen Idol,” “Our Man in Havana”) blends film noir with poetic realism in a taut character study of faith, fate, and suffering. The movie tells the story of Johnny McQueen (James Mason)—chief of a rebel IRA group shot in a robbery—and the people who exploit and ultimately betray him. Mason, star of our noir double feature, delivers a hypnotic performance that he considered the best of his career. The noted cinematographer is Robert Krasker (“Brief Encounter,” “The Third Man.”)
Introduced by Noir expert, Tony Broadbent.
