Her Master’s Voice
Narrated as well as directed by world famous British ventriloquist Nina Conti, this offbeat documentary examines the underappreciated art of ventriloquism. There are scenes of Conti’s past live performances as well as the work of other ventriloquists demonstrating the skill that goes into making puppets talk. Conti tells another story as well–her mourning the loss of mentor and lover, Ken Campbell. She must sort through his possessions to donate a doll to a museum in Kentucky that preserves puppets of deceased ventriloquists. Conti’s infectiously quirky character comes through brilliantly in her conversations with her dolls, which helps her heal.
