Gumshoe
‘The sleuth, the whole sleuth, and nothing but the sleuth.’
In his 1971 directorial debut Stephen Frears (“The Grifters,” “The Queen”) delivers a witty pastiche of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler against a background of a Britain now long faded. Albert Finney is Eddie Ginley, a bingo-caller-cum-comic who, bored with his mundane existence, takes out a newspaper ad offering his services as a private detective and is soon drawn into a world of dark streets, mysterious dames, blackmail, gun-running, drug smuggling, and murder.
