Cheerful Weather for a Wedding
A cross between “Rachel Getting Married” and “Downton Abbey,” this delectable family drama even stars “Abbey’s” Elizabeth McGovern in a similar role as the self-possessed matriarch of an English country manor with marriage-age daughters. Set in the early 1930s, the film zeroes in on a day when the eldest girl (Felicity Jones, prominently featured at last year’s Mostly British) is to be married. Her dilemma: She’s in love with someone else. To make matters worse that certain someone shows up for the nuptials, and in flashbacks we see the two meeting the previous summer and becoming smitten. Director Donald Rice handles all this with an assurance unusual for a first- time helmer.
