Brief Encounter
This is a romantic, bittersweet drama about two married people who meet at a suburban London train station and become romantically involved. The lovers, a hospital physician and a housewife, brilliantly played by Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, struggle with the intensity of their feelings and the sobering reality of their circumstances. David Lean transformed Noel Coward’s stage play into one of the landmark films of the 20th century, possibly the truest movie ever about an extramarital affair. Lean, Johnson and Howard were all nominated for Academy Awards. The elements that make a film not only good but extraordinary are here: transcendent performances, magnificent cinematography, and that hypnotic Rachmaninoff score.
