Black Butterflies
This is the deeply moving true story of Ingrid Jonker, whom Nelson Mandela called one of South Africa’s finest poets. At the opening of his first session of government, he read her poem about a black baby killed in his mother’s arms by white soldiers during a 1960 demonstration. Although she spoke and wrote in Afrikaans and her father was a minister of censorship in the Afrikaner government, Ingrid supported the rights of the black population and was not quiet about it. Carise von Houten (“Black Book”) captures her larger than life personality. She falls in love too easily and her relationships with men do not make her happy.
