This exquisitely modulated family drama portrays the relationship between a 16-year-old Chinese orphan (newcomer Zhu Lin) and her mysterious Australian sponsor and pen pal (Guy Pearce) whose generosity makes it possible for her to attend top schools. Finding herself in Sydney, she surprises him with a visit– only to discover he’s far from the glamorous benefactor he describes in his correspondence. Their meeting sets in motion life-changing events for both.
