28 Up
This series segment moves back and forth within the material shown previously. Changes are highlighted but there is clear evidence of how participants retain some of physical and psychological traits they possessed as children. It’s fascinating to see that the adult still contains the seed of the child.
(UK 135 minutes)
Background:
In 1964, British director Michael Apted interviewed a group of 7 year olds from diverse backgrounds, inspired by the Jesuit motto “Give me a child until he is seven, and I will give you the man.” He returned to interview the same subjects seven times, chronicling the progression of their lives, particularly the effect privilege or the lack of it has on them. His other acclaimed films include “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “Gorillas in the Mist.”
Mostly British is believed to be the first festival on this side of the Atlantic to show the documentaries in their entirety. They will play on consecutive Saturday mornings (except Feb. 11) at the Vogue. Apted is currently at work on “56 Up” but hopes to make it here for one of the screenings.
